From a layout perspective, I consider Carlton Oaks to be one of the best in San Diego County, second to only Torrey Pines South. As a scratch golfer, from the tips, this course gives me everything I want. It offers a variety of shots and the wind usually blows pretty hard in the afternoon making it even tougher. You have to be able to work the ball both ways and it is quite long from the tips. There are a lot of really good holes on this course.

The course is usually not in that great of shape but I don’t mind that. The greens are o.k., not quick, sometimes a little bumpy but not bad. The fairways usually play firm and fast which helps because of the length of this course. I prefere a course to be dry, firm and fast anyways. I think a lot of courses over water in order to keep things green.

Pace of play is usually o.k. I have had some rounds drag on here, but usually play in around 4:15 hrs.

The customer service is good. They have a nice bar area to grab a bite and a beverage after the round and a beverage cart on the course most of the time.

They have a driving range but it is kinda short and the balls are not that good. Putting and chipping green are pretty good.

Overall I think this course offers good value for the money. If you want to test out every club in the bag and find out how good you are playing, check this course out.

I agree with your review and also want to add that it plays well with all skill levels. As of April 22, the greens were still a bit inconsistant due to recent work, but they should smooth out by middle May.
