In my opinion the conditions at Salt Creek are above average when compared to the typical public golf courses I play in San Diego. I personally love firm, fast bermuda fairways and that is what you find here. I got an extra 15 yards or so on most of my well struck drives, which is always a nice boost to the ego. The fairways are in very nice condition with plenty of grass and had very few areas with lots of divots.

The greens are in nice shape, very smooth, not too firm, not too soft, very fair. My solid shots took one good bounce and then spun within three to four feet of where they landed. The speed of the greens was fair and consistent. They were probably running somewhere around 9.5 to 10. The greens did roll true and held there line well.

I really did like the layout at Salt Creek. This design is about as close to a true links course you will find in all of San Diego. One nice thing about this course is that you are not playing among rows of houses. A rare find in San Diego! What I also like so much about this course is that you get to hit all the clubs in your bag. They have some shorter and longer par threes and the par fours vary in length quite a bit too, leaving you different length distances into the greens. The par fives play a little bit short on this course setting up good birdie oppurtunities on all four of them. The fairways are generous and have a fair amount of slope leaving you some sidehill lies, but nothing outrageous. Since it is a links course there are hardly any trees on this course making tee shots easier because you are not forced to work the ball in any direction. Wind was also a factor on most holes because of the lack of trees. The greens are large and very undulating and when I was off with my approach shots I was left with difficult long putts and no guatentee for a two putt.

My favorite hole on the course is number 14. It is a longer par 4 measuring 462 from the black tees. The tee shot is blind and uphill but it does offer a generous sized fairway. You will be left will a longer approach shot to a fairly large green. If the pin is in the back left on the top shelf birdies will be rare and par is a good solid score.

It usually takes between 4 and 4.5 hours to play as a foursome. A lot of the hazards are marked as environmentally sensative areas keeping the pace of play up because you won’t have players in front of you searching for lost golf balls. They also have accurate GPS units on their carts giving players yardages to front, middle and backs of greens keeping the pace of play moving well. No hunting for sprinkler heads!

Salt Creek has a very friendly and knowledgable golf staff. They have a nice bar and grill area offering drinks, beers on tap, snacks, sandwiches and other goodies. They also offer a beverage cart service on the course offering cold drinks, beer, and snacks.

Salt Creek has one of the nicer practice areas in all of San Diego. They have a large wide driving range and you can hit off of grass all year round. I really like the fact that you don’t have to warm up or practive on mats. The practice balls for the range are in descent shape for the most part. That is one area they could improve some on. Some balls are newer, some are really old and beat up. The majority of the balls are the softer Srixon brand and you will find a few odd brand balls mixed in. They also offer a large putting green and very nice short game area where you can practice out of bunkers and hit 30-40 yard shots. That is something you will not find at most San Diego golf courses.

This is definitely one of my top picks in San Diego county that I like to play regularly and one course I don’t mind playing over and over. With the variety of shots it offers you do not get bored or lulled to sleep. It is in very nice shape and overall offers a very good golfing value.
